Florida’s Favorite Pepper

The Datil Pepper, a small, fiery fruit with a unique flavor profile, has a fascinating history deeply intertwined with the cultural heritage of St. Augustine, Florida. While the datil pepper’s exact origins remain shrouded in mystery, several theories attempt to unravel the tale of how this fiery pepper found its home in the ancient city.

One theory claims that the datil was brought to Florida by a Chilean jelly maker in the late 1800’s. Another possibility involves the pepper coming to St. Augustine from Cuba. The most popular theory suggests that the datil pepper was brought to St. Augustine by Minorcan immigrants in the late 18th century. These settlers, seeking refuge and opportunity, arrived from the Mediterranean island of Minorca and brought with them a variety of seeds, including those of the datil pepper. The pepper's name is thought to be derived from the Spanish word "dátil," meaning "date," due to its resemblance to the fruit.

The datil pepper's distinctive flavor, characterized by a complex blend of heat and fruity sweetness, has captivated the palates of food enthusiasts worldwide. Its versatility in the kitchen has led to its inclusion in a wide range of dishes, from savory to sweet.
